Meet the Arts at McMaster summer camps instructors: Cornelia Peckart

As the new Arts at McMaster summer camps prepare to get underway this summer, we thought we’d learn a little more about the instructors that will be working with our campers. First on the list: campus and community educator and drawing instructor, Cornelia Peckart.
Name: Cornelia Peckart
Position: Arts at McMaster Campus and Community Educator; Drawing Instructor
What does your job entail?
Planning workshops and classes for on-campus groups and developing initiatives that bring more community members onto campus.
What makes the arts camps at McMaster unique and special?
Our gorgeous location, our excellent facilities and our wonderful staff!
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
Sharing my love of art and ensuring people feel at home on campus.
What will you be teaching, and what’s your approach to teaching art?
I will be teaching drawing, which is a foundational skill for art and design. Three sayings that you’ll hear me repeat in a drawing class are:
- “The more you draw, the better you draw!”
- “The recycling bin is your friend.”
- “Draw what you see, not what you know!”
How did you get into teaching art?
I was an evening printmaking studio technician at OCAD U, and was asked to teach an afterschool printmaking class at the Art Gallery of Ontario. It was there that I discovered the joys of teaching using original art as a catalyst for creativity.
What activities do you like to participate in when you’re not working?
I’m a member of Tuesday Choir and co-host of the Art to Go podcast.
