Course Methodology: The course begins with a complete examination of the elements of film, principally style (mise-en-scène, cinematographic properties, editing, sound) and narrative (structure, narration). This provides students with the necessary terminology to analyze films, and develops their analytical skills. With this knowledge and skill in place, we examine how different films operate. Here, we consider those films which do not rely on narrative and or its conventions (documentary and avant-garde films) and the most influential (the classical and art film).
Course Objective and Grading Criteria: Through the use of a mid-term test, a term essay and a final examination the student will demonstrate the degree to which they have mastered his or her analytical ability and understanding of the course content described above.
Textbooks, Materials & Fees:
David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson, and Jeff Smith, Film Art: An Introduction. Eleventh Edition(New York: McGraw-Hill Inc., 2016).
The page numbers for the course’s assigned readings for the eleventh edition are included in the reading schedule.
A Course Reader of selected readings will be made available at the Campus Bookstore, and is also required reading.

Students in this course will have received 20% of their grade by March 15, 2019.
Mid-Term Test On February 13, 2019 = 25%
Term Essay Due March 20, 2019 = 35%
Final Examination Between April 10-25, 2019 = 40%
Grading Scale: A+ 90-100 B+ 77-79 C+ 67-69 D+ 57-59
A 85-89 B 73-76 C 63-66 D 53-56

Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:
Penalties for Late Submission: A penalty of ten marks will be imposed for every academic day assignments are late. Late assignments will receive a grade but no commentary.

Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. This behaviour can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: "Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:
- Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
- Improper collaboration in group work.
- Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.
Email correspondence policy
It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student. Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.
Modification of course outlines
The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.

In the event of an absence for medical or other reasons, students should review and follow the Academic Regulation in the Undergraduate Calendar Requests for Relief for Missed Academic Term Work.
