Course Objectives:

EXPANDED COURSE DESCRITION
 

3GS6B GUIDED STUDIO PRACTICE is a lecture, critique focused, and studio-production hybrid course. The course is designed to challenge students to produce a self-guided body of studio work that is fostered out of research and studio production. Students will be mentored to develop this independent work in ways that isolate strengths and encourage experimental growth. This course is designed to provide critical foundation for entering into ART4AS6, by organizing creative focus in preparation for the final year of the Studio arts program of the BFA degree. Students will be engaged through a dynamic critiques environment, and activities that will provide students with the critical framework and analytic skills to presentation and discussion of their work. The course is further supported by artist lectures, workshops, and readings that will encourage research groundwork and an expansive exposure to studio and material engagement. Central to the course is mentored and peer-to-peer studio evaluation in an aim to explore and enhance studio outcomes. Students are expected to demonstrate self-direction with research, studio-development, and a comprehensive ability to present on their own work, as well as the work of peers.

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES
 

  • Complete a body of work derived from exploration of hybrid media investigations, focusing specifically on the intersections of painting, drawing and print media
  • Given opportunity for further enhancement and experimentation of material investigations (tools, process and skills) and expansion of self-guided research, with focused mentorship to prompt mature scholarship
  • Research and connect your work within the context of contemporary art practices and theory
  • To communicate ideas that support your work through dynamic course work that includes critical analysis, observational skills, and the presentation of work via critiques
  • Gain knowledge of contemporary and historical artists and the ideas related to specific material and visual exploration

All studio production materials and modes of creative output are to the discretion of each students in consultation with the course instructor.

There is a $25 course fee associated with this course.

CRITQUE 2: 25% (MAR 21 / MAR 28)

CRITICAL CRITIQUE RESPONSE: 10% (FOLLOWING CLASS OF CRITIQUE 2)

FINAL RESEARCH INTERVIEW:  10% (APR 4)


Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:

Students who fail to meet project due dates or miss exams risk facing the following penalties:

All late papers, projects, and end of term assignments will be subject to penalization of 5% per day marks being docked off the final awarded grade, with no submission accepted after 7 days. Failure to not submit projects 7 days after the deadline, will then result in a 0% grade awarded for the particular project or assignment. Critiques are treated as exams. Missing 2 critiques will result in a FAILING GRADE.

Extensions or other accommodations will be determined by the instructor(s) and will only be considered if supported by appropriate documentation. Absences of less than 5 days may be reported using the McMaster Student Absence Form (MSAF) at http://www.mcmaster.ca/msaf/. If you are unable to use the MSAF, you should document the absence with your faculty office. In all cases, it is your responsibility to follow up with the instructor immediately to see if an extension or other accommodation will be granted, and what form it will take. Academic Dishonesty

You are expected to exhibit honesty and use ethical behaviour in all aspects of the learning process. Academic credentials you earn are rooted in principles of honesty and academic integrity.

Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. This behaviour can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: "Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:

  1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
  2. Improper collaboration in group work.
  3. Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.

Email correspondence policy

It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student.  Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.

Modification of course outlines

The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.

In the event of an absence for medical or other reasons, students should review and follow the Academic Regulation in the Undergraduate Calendar Requests for Relief for Missed Academic Term Work.
