In this course students gain practical experience in accompanying a student soloist taking private studio lessons for credit at McMaster University, both for weekly lessons and for the soloist’s year-end jury or recital.


Music 4GA3 is the continuation of 3GA3. Students in 4GA3 will review and build on the skills initiated in Music 3GA3.


Students taking this course need to obtain permission from the School of the Arts and the soloist’s studio teacher. Applications are due April 15 the year prior to the commencement of the course.

  1. Term Work: includes level and consistency of preparation for lessons and progress demonstrated during the course, as determined by the instructor. This grade will be worth 60% of the final grade in the course. 10% of the final grade (making up half of the term work grade) will be given to the student before March 10.


2. Final Jury/Recital: 40% percent of the final grade will be based on the accompanist’s performance in the soloist’s final jury or recital.


Attendance: Students in this course are expected to attend the weekly lessons and jury/recital performance of the soloist.




                Schedules for final juries will be posted in the glass case on the fourth floor of TSH, and students should make careful note of the day, time and place a jury is to occur. A jury is similar to a final exam; if it is missed without documented, acceptable reason, the student forfeits that portion of the final grade. Students should arrive ten minutes early for the jury performance and be prepared to perform when called upon. Nothing should be brought into the jury room other than the instrument (where necessary) and music.

Academic Dishonesty

You are expected to exhibit honesty and use ethical behaviour in all aspects of the learning process. Academic credentials you earn are rooted in principles of honesty and academic integrity.

Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. This behaviour can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: "Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:

  1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
  2. Improper collaboration in group work.
  3. Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.

Email correspondence policy

It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student.  Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.

Modification of course outlines

The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.
