MUSIC 2D03A Keyboard Harmony

Course Objectives:

This course is designed to develop the following keyboard-related skills: melody harmonization; figured bass; transposition; reading scores, music containing different clefs, and improvisation. Throughout the course, students will learn based on practical examples, irrespective of their starting keyboard skills.

Method of Assessment:


Exercise materials will be posted on Avenue to Learn throughout the course. 10 assessments, posted on A2L 24 hours in advance, will be performed in class at regular intervals throughout the course, and will be evaluated on the basis of fluency and accuracy. For each assessment, students will be able to select from 3 difficulty levels: basic, intermediate or advanced. Maximum marks are attainable in each level, although the expected performance standard is higher for the basic level than the intermediate, and higher for the intermediate than the advanced. 25% of the final grade will depend upon tutorial attendance, participation and overall progress throughout the course. There is no final exam.

Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:

All assessments must be completed. In the event of a student missing an assessment, arrangements will be made by the instructor for the student to complete the missing assessment at a later date within the course.  Regular attendance is essential; 25% of the final course mark depends upon attendance, progress and in-class participation. Please bring manuscript paper to all classes.

10% value of assessment work will be returned prior to March 10th, 2017.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:

  1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
  2. Improper collaboration in group work.
  3. Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.

Email correspondence policy

It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student.  Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.

Modification of course outlines

The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.
