Music 1E06, 2E06, 3E03, 3E06, 4E03 and 4E06 all operate on the same basic principles; students taking higher level courses are expected to perform more difficult repertoire and to demonstrate increased musicality and technical ability.
Objective: To introduce the student to new repertory and to develop technical skills under the guidance of an experienced professional musician who can nurture the students’ abilities on an individual basis.
Topics: The exact repertory and technical studies will be chosen by the instructor according to each student’s level of ability and musical interests.

Methods of Evaluation: The final grade will be based upon the following:
a) Term work: includes level and consistency of preparation for lessons and progress demonstrated during the course (technical facility, expressiveness, increasing level of difficulty of the repertoire), as determined by the instructor.
E06 courses 30% for each term 60% total
E03 courses 60% for one term 60% total
For E6 courses, the instructor will give each student an interim grade worth at least 25% of the final mark prior to the sessional date published in the University Calendar under Alast day for withdrawal without failure by default.” Instructors may choose to indicate the overall term 1 mark to their students at the end of term 1 to fulfil this requirement. For E03 courses this interim mark will be submitted prior to the equivalent date (for either Term I or II depending on when the course is taken) and will be worth 10% of the final mark. For all students this interim grade will be incorporated into the overall lesson/progress mark worth 60% of the final grade.
The instructors’ mark for all term work will be submitted to the SOTA office following the last lesson and before any juries have been heard.
b) Final jury. At the end of term II for E06 courses and at the end of the term for E03 courses (either term I or II), each student will perform a final jury of no longer than 20 minutes, for E06 courses and 10 minutes for E03 courses, during which s/he will demonstrate the ability gained and repertoire learned during the course.
The repertoire for the jury performance will be decided upon by the instructor, in consultation with the student, and the instructor may stipulate that some or all of the performance must be from memory. After the last scheduled lesson of the course, and before the jury, students must present to the SOTA office a list of repertoire studied during the course, signed by both the student and the instructor. These lists will be kept on file in the SOTA office. No jury will be heard and no grade will be issued for the course until this document has been received by the SOTA office. The student should keep a copy of all such submissions.
Schedules for final juries will be posted in the glass case on the fourth floor of TSH, and students should make careful note of the day, time and place a jury is to occur. A jury is similar to a final exam; if it is missed without documented, acceptable reason, the student forfeits that portion of the final grade. Students should arrive ten minutes early for the jury performance and be prepared to perform when called upon. Nothing should be brought into the jury room other than the instrument (where necessary), music, and the following documents:
- a list of the selections to be performed during the jury and the repertoire studied during the year (2 copies).
- copies of the music for that day’s jury, which the adjudicators may follow during the performance; this music will be returned to the student at the end of the jury.
The jury will be heard by the students’ instructor, who will contribute a mark worth 25% of the jury, and by an assigned faculty member, who will contribute a mark worth 75% of the jury mark. Together these marks will constitute 40% of the students’ final grade in the course.
Should any of the above requirements not be fulfilled, the jury may not be heard and the student may forfeit the jury portion of the final grade.
Scheduled lessons, for which the student is absent without excuse, will not be rescheduled. In those instances where SOTA receives from the students Associate Dean’s office a valid excuse for the missed lesson date, every attempt will be made to re-schedule the lesson, but there can be no guarantee that this will be possible. Rescheduled lessons will occur at times mutually agreeable to the instructor and student.
For vocal and instrumental students other than pianists, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain and pay for an accompanist for any public or jury performance, and to ensure that the accompanist meets the performance standard of the instructor.

Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:
McMaster Student Absence Form (MSAF)
This is a self-reporting tool for undergraduate students to report absences DUE TO MINOR MEDICAL SITUATIONS that last up to 5 days and provides the ability to request accommodation for any missed academic work. Please note, this tool cannot be used during any final examination period. You may submit a maximum of 1 Academic Work Missed request per term. It is YOUR responsibility to follow up with your Instructor immediately (NORMALLY WITHIN TWO WORKING DAYS) regarding the nature of the accommodation. If you are absent for reasons other than medical reasons, for more than 5 days, or exceed 1 request per term, you MUST visit your Associate Dean's Office/Faculty Office). You may be required to provide supporting documentation. This form should be filled out immediately when you are about to return to class after your absence.

You are expected to exhibit honesty and use ethical behaviour in all aspects of the learning process. Academic credentials you earn are rooted in principles of honesty and academic integrity.
Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. This behaviour can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: "Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.
It is your responsibility to understand what constitutes academic dishonesty. For information on the various types of academic dishonesty please refer to the Academic Integrity Policy, located at www.mcmaster.ca/academicintegrity
The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:
- Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
- Improper collaboration in group work.
- Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.
Email correspondence policy
It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student. Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.
Modification of course outlines
The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.
McMaster Student Absence Form (MSAF)
In the event of an absence for medical or other reasons, students should review and follow the Academic Regulation in the Undergraduate Calendar Requests for Relief for Missed Academic Term Work. Please note these regulations have changed beginning Fall 2015. You can find information at mcmaster.ca/msaf/. If you have any questions about the MSAF, please contact your Associate Dean's office.
Academic Accommodation of Students with Disabilities

Academic Accommodation for Religious, Indigenous and Spiritual Observances
Students requiring academic accommodation based on religion and spiritual observances should follow the procedures set out in the Course Calendar or by their respective Faculty. In most cases, the student should contact his or her professor or academic advisor as soon as possible to arrange accommodations for classes, assignments, tests and examinations that might be affected by a religious holiday or spiritual observance.
