Music Student is Regional Prize-Winner
Steven (Jong wan) Hur, a 4th year Honours Music student, knows that hard work pays off. Steven placed 1st in the Romantic division at the Hamilton Music Festival. And at the recent Peel Music Festival, he took 1st place with Scherzo No. 2, and 2nd place with Haydn Piano Sonata in E-flat Major. His playing was impressive: Steven was invited to perform Scherzo No. 2 for the Gala Concert at Brampton’s Rose Theatre on May 13th. He was also recommended to apply for provincial competition.
Steven is a student of School of the Arts instructor Leon Karan. Mr. Karan, a respected pianist and mentor, rose to prominence in Minsk, Belarus, as piano department head at the Music School for Gifted Students, and piano pedagogy instructor for music teachers at the university. Since moving to Canada in 1991, Mr. Karan continues to share his passion for piano instruction at several prestigious schools. Like Steven, many of Mr. Karan’s students have garnered awards in local, provincial and national competitions, and have gone on to become professional musicians.
Congratulations to both student and instructor!
