Studio Art at McMaster University is a small scale, high quality program requiring a portfolio interview for entrance. Applicants are assessed on their academic performance as well as the contents of their creative portfolio. Interested candidates should contact the School of the Arts between January and March of the year prior to their year of intended enrolment in a Humanities II program .

The art program is known for its emphasis on team teaching and self-directed study. Students are encouraged to identify their personal interests and goals early in the program and work towards an individualized plan of study in their third and fourth years. The program offers traditional areas of study in printmaking, sculpture, drawing and painting, with possibilities for alternate areas of study in a broad range of media and approaches. Students engage in photo-based art, performance art, new technologies, conceptual work and installation-based art in addition to the four main areas of study. The small class sizes in this program allow for a very individualized approach to teaching and learning, and an informal community atmosphere is well-established among students.

The McMaster Museum of Art is a valuable resource for this program. The Museum provides hands-on study opportunities with an impressive range of contemporary and historic work. Our central location gives students easy access to Toronto galleries, the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, and several arts communities within a one-hour vicinity of campus. In addition, students have access to the anatomy lab and natural areas of the Royal Botanical Gardens that border the campus. Located within the School environment, students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the School's other arts disciplines and participate in an exchange of creative ideas.
