This course student will be traveling to Italy for a eleven (11) day print residency in Venice, where students will be working with a master printmaker Roberto Mazzetto, to learn traditional methods of etching, as well as, tour the Venice Biennale, traditional paper making venue, as well as, other aspects of Venetian art and culture. Please see attached itinerary.
At the end of this residency students will produce a body of work using traditional etching techniques as well as create a research journal to document their experiences and pedagogical insights that they have learned in Venice during their residency.

Method of Assessment:
Assignment Percentage Breakdown
Journal Research: 10% at Mid term 45% year end
Students will sent reflection via email of the Canadian Pavilion or other artist of their choice, in the Venice Biennale for a mid term grade of 10%. Please send reflection no later than May 22nd.
Each day student will be responsible for the documentation of demonstration given at the residency, research on various artist, places visited, photographs, drawings or other, that clearly outline learning experiences/ outcome from the residency.
Students will create a body of work using traditional methods of etching 25%
Drawings/proofs and experimental works created along side the traditional methods of etching 10%
Power point presentation of experience at the residency 10%
Demonstrate knowledge of materials and techniques acquired through the duration of this residency such as the traditional methods of printmaking
- independent study and creative thinking through development of ideas and materials to produce a body of prints during the residency.
Demonstrate a willingness to explore new techniques/processes and undertake challenges in order to expand personal boundaries and creative outcomes.
Demonstrate research practices both historical and contemporary, which inform the artwork(s) from various sources, such as: the museum collections, galleries, in which you had visited during your stay in Venice.
Participation in the residency and daily actives that are given in the agenda
EVALUATION: THE CRITERIA FOR GRADING IS AS FOLLOWS:
Resolution/completion of project(s): the development of work(s) through explorations of materials and ideas express through drawing, plans and/or the reworking of the works in progress, full development of ideas and investigation.
Innovation/creativity: the work must exhibit an exploration of visual language through the visual imagery as well as the concepts that are expressed in the work(s).
Conceptual Knowledge: an understanding of the imagery and why it was created. This has to be more that I just like it. Why?
Technical skill: students must demonstrate the ability to execute works that they have learned through technical demonstrations of this course.
Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:
Students must submit work no later than June 12th, Upon students arrival to Canada they must make arrangements with instructor to meet for presentation of course work.
Extensions or Accommodations
Extensions or other accommodations will be determined by the instructor and will only be considered if supported by appropriate documentation. Absences of less than 5 days may be reported using the McMaster Student Absence Form (MSAF) at www.mcmaster.ca/msaf/. If you are unable to use the MSAF, you should document the absence with your faculty office. In all cases, it is YOUR responsibility to follow up with the instructor immediately to see if an extension or other accommodation will be granted, and what form it will take. There are NO automatic extensions or accommodations.

You are expected to exhibit honesty and use ethical behaviour in all aspects of the learning process. Academic credentials you earn are rooted in principles of honesty and academic integrity.
Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. This behaviour can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: "Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:
- Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
- Improper collaboration in group work.
- Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.
Email correspondence policy
It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student. Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.
Modification of course outlines
The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.
McMaster Student Absence Form (MSAF)
In the event of an absence for medical or other reasons, students should review and follow the Academic Regulation in the Undergraduate Calendar Requests for Relief for Missed Academic Term Work. Please note these regulations have changed beginning Fall 2015. You can find information at mcmaster.ca/msaf/. If you have any questions about the MSAF, please contact your Associate Dean's office.
Academic Accommodation of Students with Disabilities

Academic Accommodation for Religious, Indigenous and Spiritual Observances
Students requiring academic accommodation based on religion and spiritual observances should follow the procedures set out in the Course Calendar or by their respective Faculty. In most cases, the student should contact his or her professor or academic advisor as soon as possible to arrange accommodations for classes, assignments, tests and examinations that might be affected by a religious holiday or spiritual observance.
Other Course Information:
Health and Safety
Student will be working in a print studio that may not have the same degree of health and safety precautions that are taken at McMaster University. Please make sure you are aware of the materials you are using, and use personal protection of gloves goggles and an apron. If there are materials /chemicals that you do not feel comfortable or they have not demonstrated how to safely use these materials, you do not have to partake in that particular aspect of the residency. Students will be given nitril gloves and goggles to take on with them during the residency, if you find there is not adequate ventilation in print studio while using any solvents for clean up seek fresh air and clean plates out doors. If you feel that any materials that are provided are not safe to use, alternative projects can be arranged on your return from the residency.
