Course Objectives:

Utilizing sketch books, collage and creative research, students will gain widely applicable skills in manipulating and analyzing the communicative power of images. This course offers students from all programs the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with art making and materials while engaging in critical analysis of art and visual culture. Students will gain skills in creative self-expression, effective mark-making, composition and form. Hands-on projects will be linked to assigned readings, class discussions and lectures. Students will gain widely applicable skills in both manipulating and analyzing the communicative power of images. No previous artistic experience is required.

  • A required Custom Course Pack will be available at Titles Bookstore. Additional required readings can be found online, as noted in the schedule or by email.

Materials: A detailed material list that outlines a variety of drawing supplies necessary for this class will provided and explained during the first class. You are required to bring ALL supplies to EVERY CLASS. Additional supplies will be required for your projects. Drawing materials and other supplies can be purchased at Curry’s Art Store 610 King St. W, Hamilton.

Student Responsibilities

  • Each student is expected to complete four studio projects, a portfolio of in-class work and an exam.

  • Students are expected to come to class with the necessary materials for each work session. You are expected to supply your own materials for your projects as necessary.

  • Students are required to maintain a portfolio of all in-class drawing exercises and in-class assignments. These will be submitted for marking at end of term – as indicated on the class schedule. Instructions on how to create your porfolio will be expained during the first class. 

  • Students should plan to spend adequate amounts of time outside of class working on and completing projects for this course.

  • Each student is responsible for contributing to a supportive, dynamic classroom community. This includes: being present, on time and involved in scheduled activities; participating in group critiques and discussions with a thoughtful, supportive, critical mind; helping with setup and cleanup, and maintaining a respectful class atmosphere.

  • All assignments will be submitted at the start of class, where any assignment submitted thereafter will be considered late. Further protocal for submitting work will be discussed during the first class.

Attendance: Attendance is mandatory for all classes.

Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties

  • All work must be completed by its due date. Assignments must be handed in at the beginning of class. Protocol for hand-in will be discussed in class.

  • A penalty of one full letter grade will be imposed for every academic week assignments are late. For example, if you submit an assignment one week past the due date and if it is marked as a B, it will be lowered to a C, simply because it is late. Obviously, work due on the last day of classes will not be accepted after that date. If you are ill and miss classes/assignments you will be required to provide a verification of illness from a doctor in compliance with University regulations.

  • It is the responsibility of each student to attend all classes and exams and meet the requirements of submission for coursework.

  • McMaster Student Absence Form (MSAF) In the event of an absence for medical or other reasons, students should review and follow the Academic Regulation in the Undergraduate Calendar “Requests for Relief for Missed Academic Term Work”. Please note these regulations have changed beginning Fall 2015. If you have any questions about the MSAF, please contact your Associate Dean’s office.

Academic Dishonesty

You are expected to exhibit honesty and use ethical behaviour in all aspects of the learning process. Academic credentials you earn are rooted in principles of honesty and academic integrity.

Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. This behaviour can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: "Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.

It is your responsibility to understand what constitutes academic dishonesty. For information on the various types of academic dishonesty please refer to the Academic Integrity Policy, located at www.mcmaster.ca/academicintegrity

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:

  1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
  2. Improper collaboration in group work.
  3. Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.

Email correspondence policy

It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student.  Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.

Modification of course outlines

The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.
