Amir Amiri was born in Tehran, Iran, where he spent much of his youth studying the santur, a 72-string hammer dulcimer which is definitive of Persian classical music. He studied Indian classical music with various masters of the genre but decidedly in search of new musical textures, also worked with various Jazz greats. He has composed orchestral works for Santur and other instrumentation notably appearing in soundtracks for Lord of the Rings and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
